Sri Lanka Announces Gradual Elimination of Cess on 2,600 Goods: Minister

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has given the green light to a proposal aimed at gradually removing cess and non-tariff barriers on imported goods, according to Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

“We plan to eliminate the cess on approximately 2,600 goods in stages, continuing through to 2029, while ensuring protection for local producers,” Jayatissa informed reporters.

The phased strategy will involve the removal of para tariffs, progressing from 25 percent to 50 percent, and eventually up to 100 percent, he explained. (Coombo/Mar4/2026)
