Sri Lanka Establishes Maize Committee to Regulate Prices and Imports

by

in ,

Sri Lanka is establishing a new committee, appointed by the Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation, to determine maize prices in the country, according to Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

Minister Jayatissa stated, “Due to various problems that have arisen in the past, it has been decided that a formal methodology should be developed for the import of maize.” This decision follows cabinet approval for setting up the committee.

The plan allows for the importation of maize necessary for animal feed production by registered animal feed producers and importers. This process will be conducted under the supervision of the Department of Animal Production and Health and the Department of Agriculture. The imports will occur only when the local maize harvest is unavailable in the market to protect local maize farmers.

Sri Lanka currently does not produce enough maize to meet local demand, necessitating imports for both animal feed and human consumption. (Colombo/Mar4/2026)
