sian Development Bank (ADB) President Masato Kanda on Wednesday announced an immediate disaster-relief grant of up to USD 3 million for Sri Lanka, following an official request from the government in the wake of the island’s severe flooding and landslides.
Expressing solidarity with affected communities, Mr. Kanda noted, “I am deeply saddened by the suffering caused by these devastating floods. The government and people of Sri Lanka can rest assured that ADB will provide assistance to help save lives and rebuild communities. We will work quickly and cooperatively with the authorities to bring shelter, comfort and hope to those affected.”
The grant—channeled through the Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund (APDRF)—is designed for rapid deployment to support life-saving emergency operations, humanitarian assistance, temporary shelter, medical support, and critical early recovery needs. APDRF grants are structured to ensure member countries receive fast-tracked aid immediately after major natural disasters.
Sri Lanka has faced extensive flooding in recent days, resulting in significant loss of life, widespread displacement, and severe damage to homes, roads, public assets, and essential infrastructure. The scale of destruction has intensified the need for swift international support to bolster local response efforts.
ADB, one of the region’s leading multilateral development banks, continues to support countries across Asia and the Pacific by promoting inclusive and climate-resilient development. Established in 1966 and owned by 69 member nations, ADB remains a key partner in helping countries address urgent crises while strengthening long-term resilience against climate-induced disasters.
