Sri Lanka is set to host the IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo triathlon this month, aiming to use this global sporting event as a catalyst for tourism, investment, and urban renewal under the “#ActiveColombo” city initiative.

The triathlon, slated for February 22, will be the highlight of a week filled with activities, including a lifestyle and international expo from February 19 to 21, as well as an IRONKIDS event designed for children aged 3 to 14.

Following the race, visitors will have the chance to explore various attractions around the country. The IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo is anticipated to attract around 1,000 athletes from over 49 countries, as announced by the organizers during the official launch event at Shangri-La Colombo, the event’s official host hotel.

Organized by Serendib Multisport, the IRONMAN 70.3 is expected to generate significant high-value visitor traffic and international media exposure, establishing Colombo as a premier hosting destination and positioning it as South Asia’s most active city.

“What we are launching is not just a race; it is a platform for national confidence,” stated Rajan Thananayagam, a veteran Ironman athlete and a key organizer of IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo.

Event organizers highlighted that sports tourism is a rapidly growing global market, with participants often traveling with their families and staying longer periods, which results in higher per-visitor spending compared to average tourists.

The event is also serving as a platform to promote #ActiveColombo, a long-term initiative led by provincial and municipal authorities to enhance the city’s walkability, healthiness, and attractiveness for residents and visitors alike.

These efforts align with Sri Lanka’s recent introduction of Digital Nomad visas, offering visitors opportunities for extended stays in the country while working remotely, according to an organizer.
