SriLankan Airlines is set to introduce direct flights to Ahmedabad, marking its tenth destination in the Indian market. This strategic expansion aims to boost tourism from India, as stated by the airline. Currently, SriLankan Airlines operates flights to nine Indian cities: Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, Trivandrum, Madurai, and Tiruchirappalli.
“Ahmedabad will soon join this network as SriLankan’s tenth Indian destination,” the carrier announced. Having faced financial losses since ending its partnership with Dubai-based Emirates in 2008, SriLankan Airlines is broadening its destinations to enhance revenue opportunities. The airline remains committed to serving both major metropolitan areas and emerging markets across India, extending its services to underserved cities.
“The addition of Ahmedabad is more than just a new route; it is a calculated effort to serve six of India’s eight major metropolitan hubs. By expanding beyond traditional centers like Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai, the airline is tapping into the high-growth potential of Gujarat’s commercial capital,” the statement continued. This new route is expected to increase Indian passenger traffic by up to 12 percent over the next year, attracting a diverse demographic that includes business leaders, destination wedding parties, and families visiting relatives.
India represents SriLankan Airlines’ largest market, contributing nearly 30 percent of its total passenger traffic and 23 percent of all visitor arrivals to Sri Lanka. The island’s main airport, Bandaranaike International Airport, serves as a seamless gateway to the Middle East, the Maldives, the Far East, Europe, and Australia. The Ahmedabad route is anticipated to strengthen these connections, offering Gujarati travelers efficient access to global destinations through SriLankan’s extensive codeshare network.
To attract Indian travelers, SriLankan Airlines is emphasizing cultural heritage. The airline recently showcased its award-winning Ramayana Trail campaign, an evocative journey inviting travelers to explore the legendary sites of the epic in Sri Lanka. SriLankan Airlines currently operates close to 90 weekly flights between the two countries and anticipates growth this year due to increased demand from Indian tourists. Approximately 40 percent of ticket bookings are made directly through SriLankan Airlines’ channels.
