FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Denmark and seven other European nations will face a 10 percent tariff starting February, which will escalate to 25 percent by June unless Greenland is transferred to the United States.
In a post on truthsocial.com, Trump stated, “Beginning February 1st, 2026, the aforementioned countries—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland—will incur a 10% tariff on all goods exported to the United States of America. On June 1st, 2026, this tariff will increase to 25%.” He further added, “This tariff will remain in effect until a deal is secured for the complete and total purchase of Greenland. The United States has been attempting this acquisition for over 150 years.”
Trump’s strategy is aimed at pressuring Denmark to sell Greenland to the United States. These seven countries, all members of NATO, have deployed military support for Greenland in response.
Several Congressional Republicans have voiced their opposition to the Greenland acquisition attempt, with a bipartisan delegation visiting the territory. U.S. congressmen and senators have reaffirmed that Greenland and Denmark are strong allies of the United States.
Analysts note that Trump is adopting an expansionist doctrine similar to that of other authoritarian leaders like Vladimir Putin, aiming to establish a ‘Greater U.S.’ His previous remarks have also suggested annexing Canada.
Trump’s approval ratings have declined amid high inflation driven by the Federal Reserve’s ‘full employment’ policies, which are advocated by macroeconomists. The Fed is operating with an ample reserve regime, creating excess liquidity that boosts asset prices while increasing living costs for ordinary citizens.
Despite initially gaining power through public discontent towards the Federal Reserve, Trump has now engaged in a conflict with Fed Chief Jerome Powell. (Colombo/Jan19/2026)
